Journalists in Cameroon have begun demanding for justice over the death of one of theirs, Samuel Wazizi, who died in police custody after several months of his arrest.
Samuel Wazizi was a South West based correspondent at the time of his arrest. He was described by many as a fine pidgin news caster and was known for the love of his job.
Wazizi was arrested over ten months ago and sources say he had been subject to torture several times while in custody. It was rumored some months back that he had died but there wasn’t sufficient evidence to back this claim.
On Wednesday June 2, one of Cameroon’s television station, Equinox TV broke the news of his death during their 8pm newscast. Immediately, journalists started sharing the news on different social media platforms. The journalist is said to have died in the Yaounde military hospital.
On Thursday June 3rd, different journalism associations/trade unions in Cameroon began Tweeting about the demise of a vibrant journalist. Most of the tweets are trending with the hash tag justice4Wazizi. Cartoonists in solidarity have also come up with cartoons demanding for justice.
At the time of this report, the whereabout of Samuel Wazizi’s remains is still unknown.
