South Africa’s government has revealed their intention to get a sufficient amount of COVID-19 vaccines for her citizens. These vaccines are expected to be obtained as early as next month, depending on the success of ongoing negotiations with pharmaceutical companies, according to the health minister.
The government aims at vaccinating a minimum of 67% of the population – approximately 40.3 million citizens – by the end of the year.
The country’s Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has said the government had so far secured enough doses to immunise 10% of the population.
He added that the government was negotiating with all vaccine manufacturers as well as companies willing to make the vaccines available sooner.
South Africa is the first country on the continent to register more than one million Covid-19 cases.
