Sudan’s military has dissolved the country’s civilian government, arrested several political leaders and declared a state of emergency this morning.
Culled from the AUC twitter page
As soon as words reached the AUC, African Union Commission, the chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat tweeted his dismay at the situation.
“…the chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat has learnt with deep dismay of the serious development of the current situation in Sudan, which has resulted among other things in the arrest of Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdock and other civilian officials.” Part of his release reads.
The AUC Chairperson furthered by calling on the military and civilians to get into consultations with each other.
“The Chairperson calls for the immediate presumptions of consultations between civilians and military within the framework of the political declaration and constitutional decree. The Chairperson reaffirms that dialogue and consensus is the only relevant path to save the country and its democratic transition.”
To this effect, Faki Mahamat called on the immediate release of all political leaders.
“The Chairperson futher calls for the release of all arrested political leaders and the necessary strict respect of human rights.”
